Prof. Bakis has been a member of the graduate faculty at Penn State since 1988 and currently holds the rank of University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics.  He has also worked in the aerospace industry, at NASA Glenn Research Center, and at the US Army Research Laboratory. He received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University and MS and PhD degrees in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech.  He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Intl. Inst. for Fiber Reinforced Polymers in Construction (IIFC), the American Society for Composites (ASC), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). He has taught courses on composite materials, micromechanics, and experimental stress analysis. His research involves designing, manufacturing, and testing novel polymer matrix composite materials. Dr. Bakis has published over 300 technical papers and served as the Chief Editor of the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction from 2003 until 2016. He is the immediate Past-President of the American Society for Composites.
